The Clore Shalom School in Shenley was opened in September 1999 following intensive efforts by Rabbi Jonathan Black, members of The Liberal Synagogue Elstree (formerly Hertsmere Progressive Synagogue) and others. It is a state-funded local authority school that follows the National Curriculum, but in the overall context of a unique, pluralistic, warm and non-coercive approach to Judaism. There is a voluntary parental levy to cover the additional costs of Hebrew and Jewish studies tuition, and security.
Around a quarter of its pupils are members of our community, but the school is a completely independent body, run by its Governing Body, on which Rabbi Tobias serves ex officio and which also includes a number of other TLSE members. It welcomes families from all the local Jewish communities, whether Liberal, Reform, Masorti or Orthodox; the current admissions policy of the school does give preference to TLSE members in certain circumstances, in recognition of the synagogue's central role in the establishment of the school.
Families
with children at the school particularly enjoy the friendships that
they can continue at The Liberal Synagogue Elstree, and indeed some
families that are not already affiliated to a synagogue have chosen
to join TLSE for this reason. At our erev shabbat services in
particular many families from the school congregate to enjoy singing,
praying and eating together.
Clore Shalom School is a one-form entry primary school with a nursery. The school is full, with waiting lists for virtually all classes. Visitors are welcome by appointment - please contact the School Secretary, tel 01923 855631 or by e-mail.
