It is with great sadness that we report the death of our founder patron Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh, who was the first to give his blessing to the establishment of St Gregory's Foundation, and always took a keen interest in its work. We are delighted that his successor Bishop Basil of Sergievo has become a patron.

Saint Gregory's Foundation

Bringing hope to the needy in Russia and Eastern Europe

Saint Gregory's Foundation exists to help relieve the poverty and suffering of the peoples of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Together with our sister charity in St Petersburg and trusted colleagues across Eastern Europe we give support to humanitarian and social projects in:

  • Various Russian regions including:
    • St Petersburg and Leningrad region
    • Moscow
    • Kazan'
    • the town of Kondopoga in North Western Russia
    • Novgorod region
  • Ukraine
  • Georgia
  • refugees from Chechnya

Your support is needed

In Russia in May 2000 nearly a third of the population had an income below the official breadline. This government-defined "survival income" of 1200 roubles a month is calculated on the basis that a family of three can buy one new towel every 23 years, a pair of shoes or boots every five years and 5 aspirin per month. A nurse working full time only earns 750 roubles a month.

We are committed to:

  • supporting active and socially responsible local people, who are working to help themselves and others and thereby we can:
    • help those who find themselves in desperate poverty in particular the young, the sick and disabled and those who care for them
    • assist in building a healthy civil society
    • transfer vital skills to dedicated Russian doctors, particularly our Well Mother - Well Baby programme
    • help provide medical treatment for the child victims of Chernobyl in Ukraine
You can be sure that our aid always reaches its destination, since we have strong Russian links and only work with our trusted friends and colleagues. In St Petersburg, where our work began, these links have developed into a unique network of organisations co-operating with each other. This is a pattern we hope to develop elsewhere with time and support.

The fact that we are Orthodox in our foundation, although our membership is open to all, also means that we are trusted by those we are trying to help. They give us a privileged insight into their lives, which is rarely granted to foreigners.
