Antonina Nyakato lives in Kyatiri, a remote village in Masindi District. Now 47, she was widowed in her late thirties. This left her with sole responsibility for eight children.

Two of them, Charles and Ronald, contracted polio, resulting in severe disability. A special education teacher, who regularly passed their home, brought them to USDC's attention. When assessed in November 1992, Charles could only crawl. Ronald managed to limp on one leg support by a stick.

In May 1993 the boys underwent corrective surgery at Mulago Hospital in Kampala. Antonina attended to them during the two month stay. After the operation they were fitted with callipers and walking aids.

Many villagers were initially sceptical about the treatment. Some thought it a waste of time or even dangerous. A few tried to discourage Antonina, but to no avail. The local Catholic Church encouraged her to proceed. A prayer was said for Antonina, Charles and Ronald every Sunday.

The boys' return from hospital was treated like a miraculous event. People came from beyond Kyatiri village. Attitudes began to change. The church clinic was asked to provide sessions for people with disabilities. Many were registered, advised and helped with rehabilitation.

Antonina enroled as a facilitator for her village. She now advises and supports children with disabilities and their families. She says, "Getting in touch with USDC gave me fresh hope and encouragement to help my children. I would not have succeeded alone."

Her sons' future looks promising. Ronald's leg has grown stronger and he no longer uses a walking stick. He is in Primary Seven. Since Charles completed Primary School last year, he has been helping Antonina with her market stall. He has secured a placement at Masindi Centre for the Handicapped, to train in leatherwork or carpentry.

Antonina could not be a prouder parent.
