Advice and Consultancy[Advice and Consultancy] How can I measure the services that we provide for people with learning disabilities against best practice? Guided Self AuditThe NDT has extensive experience of service reviews that focus directly on the lives of people with learning disabilities. Reviews are particularly effective when they include local service managers and commissioners, as well as service users and their advocates. NDT consultants act as coaches guiding and supporting the process and ensuring a measure of objectivity. How can I plan to ensure that our services are what people want and are developed in partnership? Listening to PeopleThe NDT has a great deal of experience in leading or guiding consultation exercises with people who use services. We recognise the importance of asking people what they like and don't like and what they want for the future. The NDT works directly with local staff, family members and advocates in ways that involve them directly in the planning of the design and the development of services. Strategic PlanningThis service is aimed at managers who are involved in guiding the overall strategic direction of their agencies. Our work here can also involve support for the development of an inter-agency strategy. The NDT has consultants with valuable experience in facilitating these processes, with a particular emphasis on interactive frameworks. A specific incident has occurred and we need to review our practice, policy or procedures. Can NDT help us? Independent EnquiriesSituations sometimes arise in organisations which will necessitate an urgent need to review practice or procedures. Internal disciplinary action might have been necessary. In such situations, the NDT will provide consultants with specialist knowledge to contribute to or undertake independent enquiries. Our reports are focused on the needs of people with learning disabilities who use the service. They are designed to help organisations learn from past mistakes and omissions. How can I make sure our services focus on the needs of individual people? Introduction to Person Centred PlanningPerson Centred Planning involves planning around the needs and wishes of people with learning disabilities. This means that people with learning disabilities, as well as their families, friends and paid assistants should all be directly involved in decisions affecting their life. Person Centred Planning recognises how vital it is to listen to people's wishes and to assist them to express their own choices about their life. Introductory and more intensive workshops and training are available. We want to move away from group living and traditional day care towards more person-centred approaches and community inclusion.
