Leadership for Change

What's it all about?

Leadership for Change is a major new initiative from the NDT. It provides opportunities for shared learning, training and discovery for ALL people concerned to build a better future for people with learning disabilities in our society. The programme will particularly seek to address work in the following areas:

  • Organisational leadership.
  • Partnerships in Action.
  • Partnerships in policymaking with disabled people and those who use services.
  • Partnerships in policymaking with parents of disabled children.
  • Self and citizen advocacy.

It will embrace a range of co-ordinated activities including workshops, training, information, networking opportunities, problem solving and planning.

Why is it needed?

For too many years people with learning disabilities, their families, their communities, the services provided for them and policymakers have been divided by a common history. Most of our resources have been put into human services, whilst families have been left to struggle with little support, and people with learning disabilities have not had personal control over the resources that would make a real difference to them. This limits our capacity to identify, develop and support the leadership needed to create principled change.

Leadership for Change aims to change all that. It provides a context in which people can come together, in a spirit of partnership and co-operation.

What will it include?

The heart of a Leadership for Change Development Partnership is a strategy for leadership development which is tailor-made to your organisation, to other organisations in the locality and to those people who use services. The NDT is offering 2 options from which to choose. It is possible to combine both options under an individually negotiated investment package.

Option 1 - a staged development strategy for planned and principled change extending over three years to reflect the nature and aspirations of the organisation. It includes:

  • Diagnostic consultancy
  • Design of Development Plan
  • Design of Training Plan
  • Support to Implementation
  • Review and revision
  • Evaluation
  • Dissemination and shared learning

Option 2 - a community development opportunity which sets out to create real partnership with individual disabled adults and with parents of disabled children.

Including:

  • 1 Person Centred Planning Diagnostic day,
  • A four day Person Centred Planning workshop
  • A series of 18 1-day workshops, which, selected from in different ways will lead to different, but mutually supportive, learning experiences, qualifications and outcomes. These are:

Shared History, Different Experiences
Introduction to Person Centred Planning
Action Planning (half day)
Inclusive Education
Supported Living
Positioning and Assistive Technology
Communication (1)
Advocacy
Local Policies

Parent Movement, Independent Living Movement
SRV Theory and Service Design
Review and Rediscovering Community
Supported Employment
Information Technology
People who Challenge
Communication (2)
National Policies
Developing a Vision

What will be the benefits?

Development Partnerships will also have access to all the benefits outlined in the brochure and to a very large portfolio of other training and learning opportunities at preferential rates.

The NDT will support Leadership for Change and the Development Partners through additional benefits focussed on national learning from the programme including conferences, publications, networks, information services and action learning sets.

Leadership for Change opens the door to leadership development not only within organisations but also in active partnership with those who use the services provided.
