Community Inclusion
...including Supported Living
What is it all about?
Community Inclusion including Supported Living seeks to play the leading role in developing, supporting and learning from Supported Living in the UK, promoting:
- independence, choice and control for people with learning disabilities
- competence, flexibility and creativity in services
- competence, hospitality and support for a valued role in communities
Why is it needed?
The NDT has been at the leading edge of the development of the Supported Living movement in the UK for many years. As time passes and we all learn from experience, the NDT is well placed, because of its national involvement, to take the movement into the new millennium. As people with learning disabilities have been supported towards greater autonomy and self determination a new culture of expectation is growing. Direct Payments, Personal Assistance, new initiatives in accessing housing and real links into the community mean that organisations will need to be more responsive and creative in developing real Supported Living opportunities for individuals in the future.
The Community Inclusion theme will consist of a number of linked and co-ordinated activities hosted and provided by the NDT. We want to develop, not only the right service supports to people but also to create a modern and robust policy backcloth which can support meaningful change. The programme is therefore pretty ambitious and includes:
- local and national conferences and events
- shared learning through action learning sets, focus groups and workshops.
- membership of the Supported Living Network
- opportunities to influence policy at all levels.
- developing the Community Support Worker role and related learning needs.
- and a range of task specific workshops which set out to tackle thorny issues such as funding and financial modelling, 'Best Value', evaluation and standard
- setting, and regulation ....... to name but a few!!
A limited number of Development Partnership opportunities will be available to organisations or alliances of organisations to take a lead with the NDT, both developing their local strategy for Supported Living and benefiting from a national profile for their work.
Developing strategic change initiatives such as community inclusion through Supported Living cannot be achieved overnight! To make it work effectively and be part of a whole valued lifestyle for an individual takes time. The best examples of good practice have emerged from Development Partnerships that can access service commissioners, purchasers, providers and people with learning disabilities themselves to a national network of learning and experience - and there is a wealth of it out there!
The Development Partnership Initiative brochure gives you details of the broad 'package' of support and benefits available to partners. Once you have indicated your organisation's interest you will have the opportunity to discuss your specific needs more fully with a member of NDT staff and from that to develop a workplan to suit you.
We have set out to make the package attractive and affordable especially for a three year partnership but inevitably priorities will change. There will be regular opportunities to review the outputs and outcomes, to replan and to extend the scope of the work where appropriate.
