We are working for:

  • People with learning disabilities to have the same lives as everybody else.
  • Good quality services and supports.
  • Better legislation and policy in health, social care, education, employment, housing and transport.

What we do:

The NDT is an independent not for profit development agency that wants new opportunities and inclusion in ordinary life for all people with learning disabilities.

Who we are:

We directly involve people with learning disabilities in all our activities - on our Board of Management, as consultants, as core staff, policy advisers and trainers.

We work with policy makers, parents, professionals, advocates, service providers and commissioners in the UK and beyond - anyone who wants to work in partnership with us to promote better lifestyles for people with learning disabilities.

The Development Partnership Initiative is a rolling programme of work 'themes' that currently includes:

  • Community Inclusion - through supported employment and better day opportunities.
  • Community Inclusion - through supported living.
  • Ensuring Quality - in services that support people.
  • Family Matters - supporting children with disabilities and their families.
  • Best of Health - promoting good health for all.
  • Keeping People Safe - the right supports for people who are vulnerable Learning Disability.
  • Mental Health - accessing the right services and supports Leadership for Change - promoting effective leadership amongst people with learning disabilities, parents and in services.

Each 'theme' has its own work programme aimed at influencing local and national policymaking; supporting specially selected development partnerships; researching leading edge issues; providing information, advice, training and support to service planners, providers, or commissioners; and sharing learning through regular conferences, other events and publications.

All the 'themes' are person centred in approach and seek to include the appropriate cultural responses and supports for individuals.

What we can do for you:

If you have a learning disability or represent those with learning disabilities ...

we will work with you to make sure that your views remain at the heart of our work, and at the heart of the work of others.

If you have a general interest in policies and practices affecting the lives of people with learning disabilities ...

we can provide information, advice and a programme of up to the minute events and publications, including our newsletter 'Soundtrack'.

If you plan, provide or commission services ...

we can provide advice and support at the forefront of practice through selection as one of our Development Partnerships, or through our Consultancy and Training.

As well as in the key 'theme' areas identified above, we also have particular expertise in:

  • Strategic planning
  • Organisational development
  • Person Centred Planning
  • Self auditing and guided self reviews
  • Consultation with people who use services
  • Independent reviews and enquiries
