Person Centred Planning

Molly Mattingly has been working with Angus Social Work Department giving workshops on Person Centred Planning to a wide range of stakeholders and following this up with training for person centred plan facilitators. Angus now have 8 trained facilitators who are planning with people who use services and want change. Molly continues to offer follow-up support.

Molly has also been working with Dundee Social Work Department. This work has focussed initially on training people from the day service pilot in person centred approaches. It is hoped that alternatives to traditional day centred based services can be offered following from these person centred plans. Again follow-up support will be offered.

Enable are working with us to pilot two different approaches to evaluating person centred planning. One pilot using a series of questions allows self review of planning teams, person centred plans and organisational support to person centred planning. These person centred planning evaluation cards will be available from NDT. The other pilot was a Quality Network outcomes focussed review process developed for use with peoples personal plans.

Able Volunteers

European funding has been provided to look at six volunteering projects that support people who have either a learning difficulty or a mental health problem to take up opportunities in the wider community. The projects are in Edinburgh, Runcorn, Leicester, Cambridge, Chelmsford and Somerset.

Lots of people with disabilities are offering their time and talents as volunteers in the wider community. They demonstrate that everyone can contribute to make the community a stronger and richer place.

Volunteering can be a place where friendships begin and it can build up confidence and skills that lead to employment. It can be fun, provide good exercise and make the world a better place. But does it achieve all these goals or do people get trapped in lonely, boring and exploitative activities? The Able Volunteers Project aims to find out, and to offer good practice guidance.

Findings will be reported at the NDT annual conference on 17th September 2002. A report, ‘Real Assets’ is also available.

West of Scotland Research Group

The West of Scotland Research Group is a wide network of researchers and practitioners interested in ensuring the benefits of research for people with learning disabilities re maximised. The group meet to discuss work in progress and research proposals; to share ideas and good practice; and to disseminate findings. The group hope to have an advisory input to the Scottish Development Centre.

The NDT through its convening role for the Social Inclusion Research Network is a link for the West of Scotland Research Group to this inclusion agenda.

Transitions

Steve Easter is exploring the themes arising from the 26 Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund projects which are working with learning disabled young people. He is seeking to identify common policy and practice themes. These then can be supported and strengthened through networking and review activities. He is also exploring how young people’s views can be influential in shaping the projects. Steve is in contact with the 4 projects in Scotland working with learning disabled young people. He hopes to secure further funding for this work.

Other Proposals

Policy Impact Study

The NDT is discussing, with funding bodies, a policy impact study to be undertaken with self-advocacy groups. The study would look at the impact of "The Same As You?" on public awareness and attitudes, one year on.

Social Inclusion

The NDT in Scotland are planning joint research work with the Nuffield Centre on citizenship. This work will be dependent of securing the necessary resources.

The NDT is also at the early stages of discussion with A.R.C. on the possibility of joint work on inclusion and partnership.
