Causes of Disability
- Problems during pregnancy or at birth - eg. leading to cerebral palsy
- Infectious disease - eg. polio, measles, malaria
- Malnutrition - eg. Vitamin A deficiency causes blindness
- Hereditary conditions - eg. sickle cell disease
- Congenital conditions - eg. clubfoot
- Accidental injury
Prevention of Disability
- Improving maternal health
- Balanced diet/good nutrition
- Control of infectious disease through immunisation - polio, whooping cough,
measles, tetanus, diphtheria, tuberculosis
- Improving access to healthcare, allowing early management of illness
- Early intervention to limit development of condition
